Building the Perfect Retirement with the 5 Rings Framework

the 5 rings of retirement: growth, community, health, giving back, and finances
Key Takeaways:
  • Retirement planning goes beyond money; the aim is a purpose-filled lifestyle that energizes you day to day.
  • The 5 Rings of Retirement are Community, Growth, Giving Back, Health, and Finances; rate each ring from 1 to 5 to see where to focus.
  • Start with the lowest-scoring ring to restore balance and momentum in your overall well-being.
  • Turn priorities into action by setting mini-goals, breaking them into micro-steps, and staying consistent with small daily actions.
  • Let finances support what matters most by aligning money decisions with the other rings for a more fulfilling retirement.

When you search for “retirement advice,” the focus is almost always on finances.

And while financial security is crucial, there’s so much more to retirement than money.

After helping thousands of retirees over the past 8 years, I have found that a successful retirement is mostly about purpose, fulfillment, and creating a lifestyle that energizes you.

Today, you’ll learn about my 5 Rings of Retirement framework – a holistic approach to designing your ideal retirement that covers all the core areas of life.

This guide will walk you through each of the retirement rings, explain their importance, and give you a practical way to measure your own energy and fulfillment in each category.

By the end, you’ll have a clear understanding of what area needs your most attention right now – and a great starting point for gaining clarity on your ideal retirement. May you use the framework to unlock your many possibilities!

Introducing the 5 Rings of Retirement

The 5 Rings of Retirement framework includes Community, Growth, Giving Back, Health, and Finances. Together, these categories bring balance and fulfillment to your life.

Each “ring” represents a key area essential to your overall well-being. For every category, simply reflect and rate your energy levels on a scale from 1 (low energy) to 5 (highly energized and fulfilled). This will give you a clear understanding of where to focus your attention and make improvements.

Let’s dive into each ring in more detail.

Ring #1 Community

The Community Ring includes your relationships and social engagements, near and far.

Humans are hardwired for connection, which makes your relationships a critical part of your health and well-being. Despite this, 43% of older adults report feeling lonely.

Socializing doesn’t mean forcing yourself into big social events that feel overwhelming – it’s about engaging with people in ways that feel meaningful to you.

For some, this might mean a regular phone call or coffee date with a close friend. For others, it could involve joining a community group, book club, or even a fitness class to meet new friends. And yet others may need to nourish their relationships with their partners and familial ties. It all counts.

The key is to focus on quality over quantity – having a few deep, supportive relationships often matters far more than the size of your social circle.

be choosy with who you let in your circle of influence
Keep in mind that you need to be picky when it comes to expanding your social circle.

By nurturing these connections, you can combat feelings of isolation and create a network that energizes and uplifts you.

Rating Your Community Energy Levels

Take a moment to reflect – where do you land on this scale?

  • Rating 1: You feel isolated or disconnected and haven’t taken steps to change that.
  • Rating 2: You feel somewhat disconnected but have made some small efforts to improve your social connections.
  • Rating 3: You have some connections but they feel surface-level or inconsistent.
  • Rating 4: You’re building stronger relationships and starting to feel more supported.
  • Rating 5: You have fulfilling relationships you look forward to. You feel seen, supported, and connected.

It’s okay if you’re not at a 5 yet; recognizing where you stand is the first step toward gaining clarity and understanding where to focus. You can focus on building stronger, more meaningful connections.

Small, intentional micro-steps can make a big difference in how supported and connected you feel.

Whether it’s reaching out to an old friend, joining a new group, or simply being more present in your existing relationships, every micro-step you take helps you move closer to thriving in your community.

Ring #2 Growth

The Growth Ring is about challenging and stimulating your brain in the right ways. You’re designed to grow, evolve, change, and develop at every life stage – and retirement is no different.

Sadly, though, society perpetuates the story that retirement means the end of learning and growth. And this mindset does a huge disservice to older adults.

But growth doesn’t end with a career – it’s a lifelong learning process.

Without tools and encouragement to nurture new experiences, many retirees find themselves stuck in a rut, feeling uninspired and unmotivated.

So much so that as many as 36% of older adults reported feeling less motivated to engage in activities they enjoy.

While your brain is capable of neuroplasticity, and has the remarkable ability to create new pathways throughout your life, it operates on a “use it or lose it” principle. Staying curious, trying new things, and stepping outside your comfort zone are essential to keeping your mind sharp, embracing change, and building resilience.

Maintain your brain, just like you would any other muscle in your body

This doesn’t mean you need to go back to school or start a new career. Instead, think beyond stereotypes and consider what interests and challenges you.

Rating Your Growth Energy Levels

So where are you at on the growth scale?

  • Rating 1: You feel stagnant or uninterested in trying new things.
  • Rating 2: You’ve tried a few new activities but haven’t found anything that truly excites you.
  • Rating 3: You have some interests but haven’t fully committed to exploring them further.
  • Rating 4: You’re actively seeking out new experiences and learning opportunities.
  • Rating 5: You’re continually challenging yourself and embracing growth in various areas of your life.

The good news is that, as cliché as it sounds, it’s never too late to learn and grow.

Making micro-steps toward new experiences can open doors you never thought possible.

Ring #3 Giving Back

Many people derive purpose and meaning from their roles as professionals, caretakers, or parents. And when you retire, it’s natural to feel like you’re losing a sense of purpose.

Retirement is an opportunity to redefine what fulfillment means to you and explore new ways of giving back.

Volunteering, mentoring, or advocating for causes close to your heart are all powerful ways to make a positive impact in the world while also finding purpose.

In fact, research indicates that one in three retirees are already volunteering, with 91% reporting that it gives them a sense of purpose, and 79% feeling more connected to their communities through their efforts.

Giving back can also come in small acts of kindness towards others or even yourself.

Whatever it is, true contentedness comes when you identify and share your unique gifts in a way that aligns with your values.

Rating Your Giving Back Energy Levels

Reflect on where you fall on the giving back scale:

  • Rating 1: You’ve tried volunteering or helping others but haven’t found it fulfilling yet, leaving you uninspired.
  • Rating 2: You’ve thought about volunteering but haven’t taken action yet.
  • Rating 3: You have a few causes you care about but haven’t found the right way to give back.
  • Rating 4: You’re actively giving back in ways that align with your values, but still experimenting with different opportunities.
  • Rating 5: You’ve discovered the intersection of your talents, passions, and a greater purpose, using them to serve others in meaningful ways.

Hopefully, we’ve inspired you to think of giving back beyond just traditional forms of volunteering. Again, you’re not a stereotype – gaining clarity on ways to share your unique gifts with an audience that you care about, is a gamechanger.

There are endless ways to make a difference, so don’t be afraid to explore and try new (non-traditional) formats of giving back.

Ring #4 Health

Your health is the foundation of everything else in your life – and it encompasses more than just physical fitness.

Yes, balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and active living are essential, but often overlooked are the emotional and mental aspects of health, as well as brain health.

In fact, the CDC estimates that one in five older adults experience mental health problems, with anxiety and depression being the most common.

It’s important to address invisible health concerns like stress, anxiety, or emotional fatigue alongside regular physical activities.

The good news? Everything is interconnected. When you invest in one area of your health, it often improves the others, creating a ripple effect for a happier, healthier you.

Rating Your Health Energy Levels

Where do you rate your current health?

  • Rating 1: You feel low in energy physically and emotionally and struggle to make healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Rating 2: You have some healthy habits, but often let stress or other factors get in the way.
  • Rating 3: You have a good handle on your physical health but neglect your emotional well-being.
  • Rating 4: You prioritize both physical and mental health, but still struggle to maintain a consistent balance.
  • Rating 5: You’re fit, strong, and flexible, both physically and emotionally. You have a great exercise routine and a positive outlook on life.

Ring #5 Finances

Many retirees focus heavily on finances, and for good reason  – money is a tool that helps you thrive in the other four categories of life. As the saying goes, “money can’t buy happiness,” although it can, of course, provide stability and open doors to opportunities.

It’s no surprise, then, that over 50% of Americans worry about outliving their retirement savings.

Financial security is important, but it’s not just about how much you have – it’s about using your resources to support what truly matters to you (aka the other 4 Rings of Retirement).

Whether you’re working within a tight budget or are financially secure, having clarity and intentionality around spending can bring peace of mind and a sense of freedom.

Rating Your Finances Energy Levels

You’ve worked hard to build your nest egg. How confident do you feel in this category?

  • Rating 1: You’re worried about making ends meet or feel uncertain about your financial future.
  • Rating 2: You have a budget but struggle with sticking to it or feeling financially secure.
  • Rating 3: You have a good understanding of your finances but could benefit from some fine-tuning.
  • Rating 4: Your financial life is stable, and you make intentional decisions with your money.
  • Rating 5: You’re financially secure, clear on your goals, and invest your resources in what matters most to you.

Setting Mini-Goals for Retirement Success

If you’ve rated your energy levels in the 5 Rings of Retirement, you’ve already taken the first step toward creating a retirement full of balance and fulfillment. Of course, reflection alone isn’t enough to spark real change – you need action. That’s where mini-goals come in.

Mini-goals are small, actionable steps that allow you to focus on improving one area of life without feeling overwhelmed. They help you gain momentum, stay consistent, and ultimately increase your energy levels in each ring.

4 Simple Steps to Create Mini-Goals

Creating mini-goals is about bridging the gap between where you are now and where you want to be. Let’s walk through the process:

#1 Focus on One Ring

Look at your energy ratings across the 5 Rings. Which ring scored the lowest? That’s where you’ll focus first. For example, if your Community score feels depleted, nurturing relationships might be your first priority.

#2 Brainstorm Mini-Goals

Once you’ve chosen an area to focus on, it’s time to come up with an action plan. The key here is to dream big but start small. Think about the specific actions, projects, or habits that could boost your energy in that area.

For example, a mini-goal in the Community rings could be: Make 2 new friends this month.

#3 Break Down into Micro-Steps

Once you’ve chosen a mini-goal, break it down into small, manageable micro-steps. For instance, if your goal is to make two new friends this month (Community), your micro-steps could look like:

  • Join an exercise class
  • Reconnect with one old “connector” friend
  • Start one chat with a new person per day
  • Go on walks around the neighborhood
  • Do a beach cleanup
  • Research volunteer opportunities
  • Attend social events in the community
  • Learn a new hobby and sign up for a class
  • Join a Meetup group
  • Register for a seminar

#4 Commit to Consistency

Small, daily micro-actions build momentum over time. Even spending 5-10 minutes on a micro-step consistently can lead to significant progress. Remember, it’s about steady progress rather than achieving perfection.

Where Are You In Your Retirement Journey?

Take a step back and reflect on your energy levels across the 5 Rings of Retirement. Which categories are your strongest? Which could use a little extra attention?

To emphasize: this is not a competition, a race, or even a destination. It’s about embracing the ebbs and flows between each of the 5 Rings of Retirement, being mindful of where you are currently, and pinpointing what areas could benefit from some focus and nurturing. No matter where you are on the scale, know that there is always room for improvement and growth.

May you challenge yourself to take micro-steps towards enhancing your energy in each category and truly enjoy your retirement growth journey.
